Kitchen Chimneys can be installed in 2 ways, with duct where the exhaust pipe takes the smoke out of the kitchen through the duct pipe and the other is ductless or you can say on the Re-circulation mode, where the chimney is installed without any ducting and the sucked air is re-circulated back to the kitchen. In case of a ductless chimney in addition to the grease filters another set of Carbon filters is also used to remove the odor from the smoke, so the oil is removed by the grease filter and the odor is removed by the Carbon Filters and the clean air is re-circulated back into the kitchen.
Advantages of a ductless kitchen chimney:
Easy Installation: Ductless chimneys are relatively easier to install since they don't require ductwork to be installed through walls or ceilings. So the kitchens which do not have an easy exhaust outlet to take the duct out, this is the only solution.
Cost-Effective: The initial cost of installation will be lower in this case, but there will be a recurring cost of changing the carbon filters too often.
Flexibility: These chimneys can be installed in any setting as these don’t require any ducting.
Warm Kitchen: Another advantage is that in cold weather the warm air from the cooking is re-circulated in the kitchen so keeps the kitchen warm.
Suitability for different types of kitchens:
Apartment or Rental Kitchens: Ductless chimneys are often preferred in rental apartments or homes where making structural modifications for duct installation might not be allowed. This also helps in removing and installing in the new kitchen once you move from one apartment to the other.
Kitchens with No Exterior Access: In kitchens that don't have an exterior wall nearby for duct installation, a ductless chimney becomes a more feasible choice.
Some limitations to consider:
Reduced Efficiency: Ductless chimneys have lower suction capacity as the introduction of the carbon filters reduces the efficiency of suction by 30-35% so a chimney with 1000 m3/H will give you an effective suction of 650-700 only.
Maintenance: The carbon filters in a ductless chimney need to be replaced to ensure effective performance. Neglecting maintenance can result in blocking of the suction motor failures.
Ultimately, one should always try and install a chimney with ducting for better efficiency and to avoid the recurring cost of replacing carbon filters. But where there is no exhaust outlet for the duct or you are in a rented apartment and move quite often then you have to go for the re-circulation mode only.
